Homes in the hills
South of the city, the hills around Arroyo Hondo and along Old Pecos Trail and the Old Las Vegas Highway are covered in piñon and juniper, with homes set into the slopes and reached by winding drives. Arroyos cut through the area, and drives often cross them on the way in.
What these drives need
- Drainage planned first — uphill swales, culverts at crossings, armored outlets. See our drainage page.
- Asphalt on the grades, chip seal on gentler stretches.
- Supported edges on the downhill side.
- Tree care — roots removed from the footprint; pavement kept back from trunks.
- Snow plans for shaded sections that hold ice.
Shared roads
Some neighborhoods here share private roads. We can price them by lot and set up a maintenance plan. See long drives and private roads.

Questions we hear
My drive crosses an arroyo — what's best?
It depends on the flow. A properly sized culvert works for many; big flashy arroyos may need a reinforced low-water crossing.
Do you work along Old Las Vegas Highway?
Yes, on private property throughout the area.
Can you keep the trees?
We plan around them, removing roots in the footprint and keeping pavement back from trunks where possible.
